Graduate Admissions Requirements

The Department of Chemical Engineering accepts graduate students for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Research Assistantships are available. Students do not need to have a Master's degree to apply for our Ph.D. program. Students who do not have a degree in Chemical Engineering should consult the Graduate Student Handbook for additional admissions information.

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers these graduate degrees:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
  • Master of Science (M.S.)
  • Master of Chemical Engineering and Master of Business Administration (MS/MBA)

 

Deadlines for Applicants

All application material and the application fee must be received by the department deadlines. Students are encouraged to apply early, as it can take up to two months for the University of Utah Admissions Office to receive and process transcripts. All materials must be received by the University of Utah by the deadlines listed below.

  • Fall Semester
    • January 15th
  • Spring Semester
    • October 1st
  • Summer Semester
    • February 1st

Application Submission Requirements

Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA to apply and a Recommended Quant GRE score above 155

The on-line application also includes:
  • Reference forms. Three letters of recommendation are required of all applicants. We request that you have your references complete the letters on-line.

All questions on receiving transcripts must be directed to the University of Utah Admissions Office. It can take up to two months for the University of Utah Admissions Office to process this information and forward it to the department. The Chemical Engineering Department will notify all students when the University of Utah Admissions Office Application had been received by the department.

2. Transcripts

Mail transcripts directly to:

DO NOT mail transcripts to the Chemical Engineering Department. Transcripts are mailed directly to the Admissions Office.

3. GRE scores

Scores must be sent directly to the department by Education Testing Services (ETS).

  • Our school code is 4853; our department code is 1001.
  • GRE scores are required for all applicants 

4. STUDENTS APPLICATIONS ALSO INCLUDE:

TOEFL or IELTS scores. Official TOEFL scores must be sent directly to the Admissions Office by Education Testing Services (ETS). They may not be more than 2 years old. The University of Utah requires a TOEFL score (minimum score required): IBT (81) Paper Based (550) OR an IELTS score (minimum score required): 6.5
