Research

  • Characterization of wax and asphaltene precipitation in the Trans Alaska Pipeline crude oil mix (TAPS Mix) with a focus on the prediction of wax appearance temperatures, amount of wax precipitated and the composition of the wax via thermodynamic models that are being confirmed by exhaustive analysis of the TAPS Mix crude oil.
  • Process engineering studies in the characterization, recovery and upgrading of oil sands bitumen and bitumen-derived heavy oils, including fluidized bed and rotary kiln pyrolysis of oil sands, transport reactor combustion of the carbonaceous residue produced during oil sands pyrolysis, recovery and upgrading of oil sands bitumens and bitumen-derived heavy oils via supercritical fluid extraction, and hydrotreating and catalytic cracking of bitumens and bitumen-derived heavy oils.
  • Study of the influence of process variables on product distribution, activity and selectivity during the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide in fixed-bed and slurry reactors, the production of high energy, high density aviation turbine fuels over novel shape selective catalysts, the conversion of biomass pyrolysis oils over a ZSM-5 based family of catalysts, and the preparation, characterization and evaluation of supported and Raney metal catalysts and shape selective aluminosilcate catalysts.
