Instant Messaging within Chemical Engineering

Installing a client

Several clients are available that can be used to connect to the Chemical Engineering IM server, we will only discuss the Pidgin/GAIM client here. Any XMPP-compliant client should be able to work with our IM server.

Pidgin

Download and install the latest version from: http://www.pidgin.im/

  • Open Pidgin and click on the button at the top "Accounts" and then "Manage".
  • In the manage screen add a new account by clicking on the +Add button.
  • Choose XMPP in the drop down Protocol list.
  • Supply your username/screen name (more information below).
  • Supply the domain name (more information below)
  • Supply your password (more information below)
  • Name the resource something meaningful like "Chemical Engineering"
  • The Local Alias is only seen by you in your IM screen
  • Optionally check the box to remember your password
  • Click Advanced tab at the top and check box to Require SSL
  • Ensure port 5222 is listed as the connection port

Generic Information

Information applicable to any client:

  • Username: Your Chemical Engineering Login ID, typically your ID without the u or your first initial of your first name followed by your last name. This is typically not your uNID.
  • Password: Your Chemical Engineering password used to log into the Chemical Engineering network (such as the ICC machines). This is not your University password (unless they are the same).
  • Domain: butters.chemeng.utah.edu
  • Choose to enable SSL if your client supports it

That should be it, any questions should be addressed to Chemical Engineering IT Support, not the IM Client support list.
