Accreditation

The Department of Chemical Engineering was most recently accredited in 2003. In Fall 2009, the department will be reevaluated based on the engineering criteria established by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The criteria are based on a philosophy of continuous program improvement. The department is expected to establish educational objectives consistent with our mission and achieve these objectives through our educational program. All students are expected to meet outcomes determined by the department. Changes to the program are based on data collected through a variety of assessment and evaluation tools.

Continuous improvement is expected in the following eight areas.

  • Students
  • Objectives
  • Outcomes
  • Professional component
  • Faculty
  • Facilities
  • Institutional infrastructure
  • Program component

The ABET review in 1997 had this to say - "There is a caring philosophy for the undergraduate program that is pervasive". We believe that we have continued this philosophy as we have evolved in adopting ABET's program of continuous improvment. The Department Administration and Faculty wholeheartedly embraced the notion of program evolution and continuous quality improvement in all aspects of the educational process.

Detailed descriptions of the criteria, assessments, evaluations and program improvements are available is Annual Reports on this website. A comprehensive self-study will be prepared for the 2009 ABET review. We will be happy to entertain questions, comments or suggestions about the process or any other aspect of the program.
