Undergraduate Scholarships
University of Utah students have many fantastic options to apply for financial aid. The Department of Chemical Engineering offers several annual scholarships. The College of Engineering likewise has annual scholarships for Chemical Engineering students, including freshman and transfer students. Some of our students have been able to graduate free of debt by using the scholarship resources offered to them and we encourage every student to apply.

University Scholarships & Financial Aid
The University of Utah's office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can answer questions about university scholarships, student loans, and Pell grants.
Department of Chemical Engineering Scholarships

AIChE Chapter Leadership Scholarship
Description: Awarded to the student-elected president of the AIChE Student Chapter for service and leadership to the department.
Alice & William VanTalge Transfer Scholarship
Description: Endowed through a generous gift from the VanTalge estate, this scholarship provides encouragement and financial assistance to students entering the University of Utah from another institution of higher education who are pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. Only students who are in the process of transferring are eligible.
Donald A. Dahlstrom Outstanding Service Scholarships
Description: Awarded to recognize outstanding volunteerism and leadership to the department and university communities and to the general public.
Donald A. Dahlstrom Scholarship
Description: Awarded in honor of the late Professor Donald Dahlstrom, a well-beloved educator and leader in chemical engineering, to recognize high academic merit.
Dr. W. James and Wanda Frandsen Undergraduate Scholarship
Description: Awarded through a generous endowment established Dr. W. James and Wanda Frandsen to recognize students with scholastic merit and provide encouragement for completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. The applicants shall also submit a one to two page essay explaining any challenges or difficult circumstances the applicant has overcome and the inspiration or life experiences that have had an impact on the applicant. Gregory P. & Suzanne L. Starley
Description: This generous scholarship was funded by Greg (PhD ChE ’82) and Suzanne Starley to encourage excellence in the study of engineering. Dr. Starley is a member of the Engineering National Advisory Council.
Guinevere and Kevin Cummings Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is generously funded by Guin (BS ’86) and Kevin (MBA ’93) Cummings to provide support and encourage excellence for an outstanding Chemical Engineering student.
J.D. Seader Leadership Scholarship
Description: Awarded in honor of Professor Seader, a renown leader in chemical engineering education, to recognize the service and leadership provided by the student-elected SAC chair.
Kingston - Energy Scholarship
Description: There are three $1,000 scholarship awards available for undergraduate students; the following criteria will be used:
• US citizen or permanent resident
• Interest in an energy-related career
• A minimum of 3.0 GPA

Mark and Alice Isaacson Scholarship
Description: Provided through the generosity of alumni, Mark and Alice Isaacson, this scholarship recognizes scholastic merit and provides encouragement to students of chemical engineering.
Neelu Ramaswami Scholarship for Women
Description: Awarded through a generous endowment established by Dr. Ramaswami Neelameggham in honor of his father to encourage women to pursue careers in chemical engineering.
Neil R. Mitchell Scholarship
Description: This scholarship was established in honor of Mr. Mitchell a graduate of the University of Utah, in Chemical Engineering.
Red Hanger Dry Cleaners Scholarship
Description: Brad Overmoe, alumnus and president of a successful dry cleaning business, provides an annual donation to support students of merit in chemical engineering.
Shelley W. Stratton Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is generously funded by Scott L. Stratton (BS ’77) in memory of his wife, Shelley W. Stratton, who passed away in May 2011, to provide support and encourage excellence for an outstanding Chemical Engineering student.
Team 1 Plastics Undergraduate Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is generously funded by Craig Carrel (BS “82) and Gary Grigowski, owners and partners of Team 1 Plastics in Michigan, to provide support and encourage excellence for an outstanding Chemical Engineering student.
University of Utah Tuition Scholarships
Description: Provided by the University of utah to encourage academic merit, these scholarhsips carry a variable value dependednt upon personal registration and residency.
Walter J. Coulam Engineering Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is generously funded by Wes J. Coulam, Walter Coulam’s (BS “67) son, to provide support and encourage excellence for an outstanding Chemical Engineering student.
Walter L. & Treva Pershing Scholarship
Description: Established by Senior Vice President, Distinguished Professor David W. Pershing, to honor his parents' support of education and to encourage juniors and seniors of U.S. citizenship in their pursuit of excellence in chemical engineering.

Arel Berrier
Requirements:
Complete two (2) full semesters during the academic year (min. 12 credits per semester)

College of Engineering Scholarship
Requirements:

- GPA: 3.0 GPA or higher
- Special Criteria: Consideration of financial need
College of Engineering Transfer Scholarship
Description: Demonstrated financial need.
Requirements:
- Eligibility: Available to students transferring to the University of Utah from any accredited two or four year institution (at least 30 transferable semester hours). Must be matriculated. Must be registered for at least 12 credit hours semester of award.
- Status: Pre-engineering, Intermediate, or Full Major status in any engineering major Residency: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- GPA: 3.0 GPA or higher
College of Engnieering Distinguished Service Award
Requirements:
- Eligibility: Complete two (2) full semesters during the academic year (min. 12 credits per semester)
- Status: Must have achieved at least intermediate status in any engineering major except
- Residency: U.S. Citizen
- GPA: 3.0 GPA or higher
- Special Criteria: For a student who has provided outstanding service to the college in support of its mission and has demonstrated a quality education.
David E. & Carol C. Salisbury Scholarship
Requirements:
Complete two (2) full semesters during the academic year (min. 12 credits per semester)
- Status: Must have achieved at least intermediate status in any engineering major
- Residency: U.S. Citizen AND Utah Resident
- GPA: 3.0 GPA or higher
Dennis and Judith Grimes Undergraduate Scholarship
Description: Demonstrated financial need. May not be granted in addtion to College or Departmental Scholarships.
Requirements:
- Eligibility: Complete two (2) full semesters during the academic year (min. 12 credits per semester)
- Status: Must have achieved at least intermediate status in any engineering major except Civil Residency: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- GPA: 3.6 GPA or higher
- Amount: $5,000 (may be renewed based on maintaining at least a 3.6 GPA)
- Special Criteria: Demonstrated financial need; May not be granted in addition to College or Departmental Scholarships
FL Smidth Scholarship
Description: Write essay on interest in consulting engineering. Open to ChemE, Civil & Enviormental, EE, MechE, and Material Science students only.
Requirements:
Complete two (2) full semesters during the academic year (min. 12 credits per semester)
- Status: Full major status AND Junior AND/OR Senior Status (have 1 or 2 years left of courses left before graduating from the engineering program) Open to ChemE, Civil & Environmental, Electrical, MechE, and Materials Science students only.

Description: The Oblad Medal of Excellence is provided annually to an exceptional graduating senior. Funded by the late Professor Alex Oblad, the award recognizes achievement and leadership during a career in undergraduate studies in chemical engineering.
