2013 US National Meeting of the Combustion Institute

Professor James Sutherland in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah organized the US National Meeting of the Combustion Institute (combustion2013.utah.edu). The US National meeting represents one of the largest meetings of the Combustion Institute, an international organization founded in 1954 to promote research in combustion science and applications. The eighth such meeting was be held in Park City, Utah May 19-22, 2013 and was be hosted by the University of Utah and the Western States Section of the Combustion Institute. This meeting brings together researchers from around the United States and Canada who are engaged in all aspects of combustion research to share recent advances in the field. The meeting featured 330 paper presentations with about 420 participants.

TerraTek, a Schlumberger Company, graciously hosting a special meeting and tour of its facilities on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 4 PM.

Participants should plan on arriving for a 4:00 p.m. tour. Wes Martin, General Manager of TerraTek, will give a short welcome and background on the company. This will be followed by a tour. Science Olympiad 2013

Our outreach team and several student volunteers organized the experimental design competition for the Science Olympiad yesterday.

Congratulations to West, Bountiful, and Davis high schools for taking 1st 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the high school division. In the junior high division, congratulations to Centennial, Orion, and Fairfield junior highs for taking 1st 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

2013 AIChE Regional Meeting

We are very proud of the performance of our students at this year’s AIChE Regional Meeting. In the Chem E Car Competition their cars took 3rd and 4th place, qualifying the University of Utah to compete at the national competition. In Chem E Jeopardy they took 1st place for the 3rd year in a row!

Student’s Nepal Biomass Cookstove

Students from the University of Utah present their improved biomass cook stove for rural communities in Nepal. The improved stove will reduce harmful emissions and wood consumption, which will in turn improve indoor air quality, reduce harmful health effects from inefficient combustion, and reduce burdens on women and children who most often gather fuel wood and are in the home during meal preparation. The project is funded through the US Environmental Protection Agency’s P3 (People, Planet, Prosperity) Student Design Competition for Sustainability which funds student projects that benefit people, promote prosperity and protect the planet by designing solutions that move us towards a sustainable future.

NSF Research Fellowship Award

Congratulations to our own Michael Newton, for being awarded a National Science Foundation Research Fellowship. Over 13,000 students applied this year, and only 2,000 awards were given. Within the field of engineering, Michael was the only awardee from the University of Utah.
