GENERAL PURPOSE:
Develops engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Company’s generation, transmission, distribution, telecommunication, or other utility facilities/systems.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Improves combustion throughout the fleet by providing solutions to complex engineering, operations, and maintenance challenges.
- Supports plant personnel by providing technical oversight and guidance regarding fuel characterization and combustion performance in PacifiCorp Energy’s fleet of coal-fired generating stations.
- Supports senior managers by providing technical expertise and consulting services related to coal and coal combustion.
- Analyzes the effects of coal composition on boiler operation and performance, including fouling/slagging behavior, thermal efficiency, and fireside corrosion and erosion.
- Helps plant personnel formulate strategies which minimize pollutant formation based on best engineering practices and knowledge of combustion dynamics.
- Provides on-site support to plant engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel by:
- Tuning boiler controls, including controls optimization tools, to ensure compliance with air quality permits and to optimize combustion efficiency.

- Tuning sootblower control systems.
- Support testing boiler gas flow distribution, gas composition, and boiler equipment performance, testing performance of modified or upgraded equipment, and conducting test burns.
- Support inspecting plant equipment during scheduled and forced outages, and by helping plant personnel create inspection reports and repair recommendations.
- Training plant engineering, operations, and maintenance personnel.
- Investigating the root causes of failures and performance deficiencies and by working with plant personnel to develop action plans to prevent future failures.
- Works with plant and fuels personnel to develop fuel blending strategies to meet plant performance targets.
- Drives improvements in boiler combustion performance by:
- Analyzing the gaps between current performance and performance expectations.
- Identifying the costs of poor combustion.
- Working with plant personnel to develop prioritized action items to improve combustion performance and by guiding plant personnel as they implement these action items.
- Organizing internal and external resources to support plant personnel in these tasks, and
- Monitoring changes in plant performance, and reporting these trends to managers and plant personnel.
- Creates written standards, guidelines, and best practices.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications for this position:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or scientific discipline. Non-degreed individuals with some technical training and additional years of experience may be considered.
- A minimum of seven years of experience with utility boilers resulting in the skill set necessary to perform the activities described above. (Will accept candidates with less than seven years experience; compensation will be commensurate with appropriate grade level.)
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of proper operation and maintenance of sootblowers, pulverizers, regenerative air heaters, fans, burners, tilt mechanisms, coal handling equipment, etc.
- Must possess outstanding consultative, communications, and team-building skills.
- Demonstrated track record of influencing and motivating others toward the achievement of critical business objectives.
- Must be willing to travel to and work at plant sites and must have a valid driver’s license.
- Licensure as a professional engineer (PE). (For the Principal Level.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degrees in engineering or business.
- Experience developing and implementing strategies for process performance improvement.
- Knowledge of the Company’s generating stations, business practices, policies, and procedures.
- Experience inspecting, operating, and maintaining boiler equipment from a variety of manufacturers and in a variety of configurations, including both tangentially- and wall-fired boilers.
- Experience negotiating contracts and managing projects.
- Experience configuring and tuning automated sootblower control systems.
