In an effort to promote academic exchange and partnerships between the University of Utah and international partners, we have been hosting many visiting scholars and students from top universities in China. This exchange has been of outstanding value to both the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI) at the University of Utah. These visiting students, professionals and faculty members have been working closely with faculty members (Dr. John McLennan, Dr. Shu Jiang, and others.) on research projects and peer-reviewed scientific publications. The following short biographies introduce some of the visiting Chinese scholars and students currently at the University of Utah.
Prof. Haiyan Zhu
Prof. Zhu is an associate professor in the School of Oil and Natural Gas Engineering at Southwest Petroleum University in Chengdu-Panda province, China. He is also a senior scientist with the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation. He is currently a visiting professor at the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI) and the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah, working closely with Dr. John McLennan and Dr. Shu Jiang.
He worked at SINOPEC Jianghan Oilfield Company from July 2009 to August 2010. Prior to that, in 2013, Dr. Zhu earned his doctorate in petroleum engineering – focusing on rock mechanics – from the China University of Petroleum (Beijing). He has participated in hydraulic fracturing design and field operations for the world’s first supercritical-CO2 fracturing job in the Yanchang oilfield, Ordos Basin in Shanxi Province. He has authored more than 50 papers in the SPE Journal, Energy, Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, Ocean Engineering, etc. He has been a PI of more than 20 projects from NSFC, CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC, etc. He is a frequent reviewer for many journals, including RMRE, JPSE, JNGSE, etc.
朱海燕主要从事石油工程岩石力学及配套工具技术方面的研究。现为西南石油大学石油与天然气工程学院副教授，油气藏地质与开发工程国家重点实验室固定研究人员，美国犹他大学能源科学研究院访问学者（合作导师John McLennan、Shu Jiang）。2009-2010年于中国石化江汉油田分公司工作。2013年毕业于中国石油大学（北京），获工学博士学位。近五年，先后主持政府及企业项目20余项，发表论文被EI收录8篇，被SCI收录24篇（第一/通讯作者19篇，其中JCR一区论文5篇）。担任国际期刊《Petroleum & Petrochemical Engineering Journal》副主编辑。担任《Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering》等10余个国际SCI期刊的审稿人。
Prof. Yan Deng
Yan Deng is an associate professor in the School of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at Southwest Petroleum University, Sichuan Province, China. Her current specialization encompasses advancing fundamental theory and application technology for oil and gas reservoir stimulation. She has presided over or participated in numeous research projects sponsored either by the government or by operators. She has published more than 10 papers. As a visiting scholar at the University of Utah, Yan Deng has focused her research on the efficient stimulation of deep, low-permeability sandstones under the supervision of Prof. John McLennan.
邓燕，副教授，就职于西南石油大学石油与天然气工程学院。主要从事油气增产措施的理论及工艺研究；主持及参与多项项国家及油田研究课题；公开发表论文10余篇；目前作为访问学者，在犹他大学跟着John Mclennan.教授从事深层致密砂岩高效改造理论及技术研究。
Chengpeng Song
Dr. Chengpeng Song is currently working with the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration & Development of PetroChina, assessing the geology and resources of global hydrocarbon basins. He has published more than 20 papers. He received his doctorate in geology from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a bachelor’s in geology from Northwest University of China. At the University of Utah, he mainly collaborates with Dr. Shu Jiang on evaluations of the petroleum geology of northwest Africa.
宋成鹏目前就职于中石油勘探院，主要从事全球盆地地质与油气资源研究。发表论文20余篇。博士毕业于中国科学院地质与地球物理研究所，本科毕业于中国西北大学。在犹他大学主要和蒋恕合作西北非石油地质研究项目。
Qin Yin
Qin Yin is a visiting doctoral student from Southwest Petroleum University in China. Dr. John McLennan is his host supervisor. His research currently focuses on hydraulic fracturing optimization in unconventional oil and gas reservoirs using FEM-based numerical simulation. Specific research topics of interest include numerical modeling of complex fracture propagation, interaction between hydraulic fractures and interfaces in layered formations, multi-field coupling, fundamental research on properties of non-linear elasticity and fracture process zones, and high-performance scientific computing.
尹庆来自西南石油大学的联合培养博士生，联合培养导师为John McLennan.目前主要研究非常规油气藏的水力压裂有限元模拟优化。研究内容包括: 复杂裂缝的延伸扩展模拟; 水力裂缝的层间扩展;多场耦合; 非线弹性理论和断裂过程区; 高性能科学计算。
Hongyuan Zhang
Hongyuan Zhang is a visiting doctoral student from China University of Petroleum (Beijing). His major is in the field of drilling and completion engineering. He is currently working with Dr. John McLennan on cryogenic fracturing in hot dry rock, coupled hydro-thermo-mechanical simulation of convective heat transfer, stimulation of coalbed methane reservoir with pulsating hydro-fracturing technology.
张宏源来自中国石油大学（北京）的联合培养博士生，联合培养导师为John McLennan。主要研究方向为干热岩储层液氮超低温压裂改造，井筒瞬态传热流-固-热耦合计算，脉动水力压裂煤层增透改造。
Zhiyuan Liu
Zhiyuan Liu is a visiting doctoral student from China University of Petroleum (Beijing). His major is in the field of drilling and completion engineering. He is currently working with Dr. John McLennan on the Influence of fracturing parameters on post-fracturing shale gas production as well as on drag reduction mechanisms associated with hydraulic fracturing fluid.
Chen Zhang
Chen Zhang is a doctoral student of the State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resources and Prospecting, China University of Petroleum Beijing (CUPB). He received his bachelor’s degree from China University of Geoscience Beijing and a master’s degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). His research employs an integrated approach, incorporating geology, geophysics and geochemistry, to reveal tectonic evolution of the deep Junggar basin, Eastern Junggar and Western Junggar in the CAOB. He is collaborating with Dr. Shu Jiang on evaluating the geology of resource plays and fundamental geology of the earth. He has published several papers in international and domestic journals.
张晨，中国石油大学（北京）油气资源与探测国家重点实验室博士研究生。本科毕业于中国地质大学（北京），硕士毕业于中国科学院。主要利用地质学、地球物理和地球化学手段进行中亚造山带准噶尔盆地、东准噶尔和西准噶尔构造演化研究。在犹他大学主要和蒋恕合作致密油气藏地质和其他基础地质研究。基于此研究张晨博士已经在国际上和国内发表若干论文。
Tao Hu
Tao Hu is currently a Joint Ph.D Candidate at the Energy & Geoscience Institute, EGI, at the University of Utah and the College of Geoscience at the China University of Petroleum (Beijing). He earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from China University of Petroleum (Beijing) and China University of Petroleum (East China), respectively. His current research interests include basin analysis, petroleum accumulation mechanisms, and unconventional petroleum system. He has published six papers and has two issued patents. He is collaborating with Dr. Shu Jiang on unconventional petroleum systems.
胡涛目前是一名由犹他大学能源与地球科学学院和中国石油大学（北京）地球科学学院联合培养的在读博士研究生，他分别从中国石油大学（北京）和中国石油大学（华东）获得硕士学会和学士学会。他目前的研究方向包括盆地分析，油气成藏机理与非常规油气系统评价。他目前共发表6篇文章和2篇专利。在犹他大学主要和蒋恕博士合作非常规油气系统研究。
Kun Zhang
Kun Zhang is a visiting doctoral student from China University of Petroleum at Beijing. He is collaborating with Dr. Shu Jiang on petroleum systems of shale gas reservoirs.
张昆是来自中国石油大学(北京)非常规天然气研究院的联合培养博士生。在犹他大学主要和蒋恕博士合作页岩气系统研究。
Luchuan Zhang
Luchuan Zhang is a visiting doctoral student at EGI from China University of Petroleum (Huadong) at Qingdao. He is collaborating with Dr. Shu Jiang on unconventional reservoir characterization.

Lei Chen
Lei Chen is a third-year doctoral student at the Unconventional Natural Gas Institute of China University of Petroleum at Beijing. His major is in geological resources and geological engineering, and his research interest is reservoir characterization of gas shale, especially characterizing the pore structure and its genesis and its role in shale gas storage. Currently, he is a visiting doctoral student hosted by Dr. Shu Jiang and is conducting research on gas adsorption and gas storage in organic-rich shale systems at the University of Utah.
陈磊，中国石油大学（北京）非常规天然气研究院在读博士研究生，地质资源与地质工程专业，研究方向主要是含气页岩的储层表征及赋存机理。发表论文10余篇。在犹他大学主要和蒋恕博士合作开展富有机质页岩中气体吸附与赋存研究。
Qifeng Wang
Qifeng Wang is a doctoral student from China University of Petroleum Beijing (CUPB). She is collaborating with Dr. Shu Jiang on evaluating the geology of resource plays.

Zhijuan Tang
Zhijuan Tang is a visiting graduate student from Southwest Petroleum University in China. Dr. John McLennan is her host supervisor. Her current research focuses on enhanced oil recovery using the hyperbranched polymers. This research includes synthesizing hyperbranched polymers with different molecular weights, analyzing the application of these hyperbranched polymers in different formations with varying permeability, and the general adaptation of hyperbranched polymers in the oilfield.
