The University of Utah’s Department of Chemical Engineering would like to give a warm welcome to its newest member of the department faculty, Deisy Cristina Carvalho Fernandes. She joined the university as an assistant professor on August 1.

Fernandes received her bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also attended the University of Sao Paolo in Brazil.

She was a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University in Providence, RI, from 2020 to 2022, and was also an instructor for the School of Engineering at Brown in 2021. Fernandes earned a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and a Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship. She also received two first-place presentation awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Her research focuses on 3-D printing of 2-D nanomaterials (e.g., graphene and other materials) for biomedical/biosensor and energy applications, and the controlled release of intercalates.
